Macbeth is still one of the most widely performed plays Shakespeare ever wrote, it is about Macbeth and Banquo, who are generals serving under King Duncan of Scotland, meet the three witches who prophesy that Macbeth will become King of Cawdor, and that Banquo's heirs will also be kings.
Soon Macbeth is made thane of Cawdor, which leads him to believe the rest of the prophecy will indeed come true. He then tells his wife, Lady Macbeth, who plots to kill Duncan when he spends a night at Macbeth's castle, Dunsinane. Urged by Lady Macbeth, he kills Duncan, and the murder is discovered by Macduff. Fearing for their lives, Duncan's two sons Malcolm and Donalbain flee the country, which makes them look guilty in murdering their father and so Macbeth becomes king, fulfilling the prophecy.
Macbeth then murders Banquo who haunts Macbeth. Fleance, Banquo's son escapes and the Lady Macbeth is driven to insanity by her own guilt.
Macbeth then orders the deaths of Macduff's family including his children after he learns that Macduff has joined Malcolm's army.
When the army, using branches from Birnam Wood as camouflage, advances on Dunsinane, Macbeth sees the prophecy being fulfilled.
Lady Macbeth dies, Macbeth is killed in battle by Macduff and Malcolm then becomes the rightful king.
