William Shakespeare's play , King John, begins with Arthur, the King's nephew being backed by the King of France in a rebellion. King John refuses the King of France's demand that he step down from the throne and sends an army to France.

The English army, under the command of Philip Faulconridge, battles with the French army at Angiers but the battle proves to be anything but climactic and neither side conquers the other. King John proposes peace but is excommunicated by the Pope over an argument involving the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Pandulph, the Pope's legate, tells the French King to continue their war against King John, but King John's army fight off the French and Arthur is captured only to escape and plunge to his death.

With Arthur's death, the king's nobles desert him for the French.

During all of this John strikes a deal with Pandulph and turns over the crown of England to him so he can be re-crowned and be accepted by the church again.

King John's scheme works and Pandulph tries to stop the war between the French and the English but the French won't hear of it and a final battle is staged at St. Edmundsbury.

Amidst the battle a French noble is mortally wounded and warns the English nobles who turned on their king that the King of France will execute them once the King of England is conquered. The nobles, fearing for their lives, swear allegiance once again to King John and the French King strikes a deal with Pandulph and King John.

King John dies soon after though because he is poisoned by a monk and his son becomes King Henry III.
