While in college in Germany, the prince of Denmark, Hamlet, finds out his father, the king of Denmark is dead and that his uncle, the king's brother, Claudius, has assumed the throne. Full of grief and rage he Hamlet returns home for the funeral but his anxiety grows when his mother, Queen Gertrude marries King Claudius, whom Hamlet hates.
Hamlet soon hears word that Bernardo and Marcellus, have reportedly, on two nights, seen the ghost of the dead King Hamlet on the royal castle.
Hamlet goes along to see the spirit of his father and is told by his father's ghost to revenge a "most unnatural murder," and that his murderer was indeed his brother Claudius.
Hamlet tells those he's with never to tell what they saw. Hamlet also tells them about his plan to fake madness whilst avenging his father.
As Hamlet's madness sets in, he alienates his beloved, Ophelia and his friends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern.
One night when a band of travelling actors come to entertain the courts, Hamlet urges them to act out the murder of his father, thinking that his uncle, King Claudius will react and reveal his guilt.
Later, after some more murders, Claudius plots against Hamlet.
Claudius supplies Laertes with a poisoned tipped fencing sword to use against Hamlet in a fencing match for entertainment purposes.
Claudius also prepares poisoned wine that he will make sure Hamlet drinks during the match-up.
Laertes grazes Hamlet with the sword, breaking through the skin and poisoning Hamlet.
The match continues, swift and rough, back and forth and the two duelers drop their swords and accidentally, the swords are switched.
Hamlet then grazes Laertes with the same poisoned tip sword.
Hamlet's mother, Queen Gertrude unknowingly drinks the poisoned wine in a toast to her son's agility.
Everyone realizes they have been poisoned and Laertes and Gertrude tell Hamlet of Claudius's evil deeds and Hamlet with his last strength kills Claudius with the poisoned sword.
Hamlet dies and there is a huge funeral for him.
